Fall Semester 2020 FAQ

Q: Do I need to purchase a permit this year?

A: Yes. Parking permits are required in all lots this upcoming year.

Q: When can I buy a permit?

A: Permits are now on sale as of August 17, 2020.

Q: Will there be discounted permits for students taking hybrid classes?

A: Parking Services is not currently reducing the price of permits for students enrolled in hybrid classes. We recommend students who are on campus sporadically to purchase a permit at one of the dispenser boxes located in select lots. View dispenser permit prices.

Q: What's the difference between a Student Annual Permit and a Commuter Permit?

A: Student Annual Permits cost $285 for the full academic year and are valid in all student lots on campus. We recommend these permits to any student who is living on campus.

Commuter Permits cost $180 and are only valid in D, G, N, S, U and Y Lots. We recommend a Commuter Permit to students who are not living on campus. Daily permits are also available for $5 and if purchased once a week for the year would cost a total of $140. Commuter permits allow movement to all commuter lots, offer unlimited parking in those lots,  and avoid the task of purchasing from the dispenser.

All students are eligible for both permits.

Q: What's the difference between a Faculty/Staff Annual Permit and a Commuter Permit?

A: Faculty/Staff Annual Permits cost $320 for the full academic year and are valid in all lots on campus.

Commuter Permits cost $180 and are only valid in D, G, N, S, U and Y Lots. This permit is a good solution for Faculty/Staff who will not be on campus fulltime. Daily permits are also available for $5 and if purchased once a week for the year would cost a total of $140. Commuter permits allow movement to all commuter lots, offer unlimited parking in those lots,  and avoid the task of purchasing from the dispenser.

Q: If I order the wrong permit, can I change it?

A: After your permit has been shipped, you will not be able to change your permit order, so please evaluate your permit needs closely before you request a permit. 

Q: How do I pay for my permit?

A: Student permits will automatically be added to student bills. Student permits that are requested in August will appear on the bill in September. 

Q: Can faculty/staff buy parking permits using payroll deductions and/or pre-tax wages? 

All permits must be purchased by credit card. The 2018 Tax Cut and Jobs Act disallowed deductions for parking permits along with other qualified transportation fringe benefits. Through August 2020, UNC continued to offer pre-tax parking permits through payroll deductions and paid the tax expense for employees. With the implementation of new parking software and the need for budget reductions, unfortunately, permits can no longer be purchased through payroll deductions or using pre-tax wages.

Q: What should I do if I accidentally enter incorrect vehicle information when ordering a permit?

A: If you enter the incorrect vehicle information, please contact Parking Services with the correct information and we will be able to update it in our system. 

Q: How do I get my permit?

A: Moving forward, all permits will be mailed to the address you select; please make sure you enter the most accessible mailing address. Permits will not be available for pick up in the Parking Services office. If you do not receive your permit two weeks after purchasing, please contact Parking Services. 

Q: How long will it take for me to get my permit in the mail?

A: Permits are expected to ship 8-10 days from purchase. If after the 10th day you have not received your permit, please contact Parking Services. 

Q: Can I still get a SK or CK permit?

A: As of August 2020, Parking Services has eliminated K permits. Employees will be able to park in KW with a Faculty/Staff permit and students will be able to park in KE with a Student Annual Permit.

Q: Can I purchase a student permit for one semester?

A: If you are only needing a permit for one semester, you would need to initially purchase the permit for the full year, and then when you’re done with it in December, you would just mail the permit to the Parking Services office. We’ll credit your student bill for the time you don’t use.

 Q: What do I do if I get a ticket?
