MLK Day Celebration Jan. 15 to Feature March, Ceremony; UNC Offices Closed

Greeley's Jan. 15 celebration of the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. will include the traditional three-block march in downtown and a post-parade ceremony.

The celebration, in its 23rd year, will begin at 10:15 a.m. with pre-march activities at the Greeley Chamber of Commerce, 902 7th Ave. At about 10:40 a.m., the march will make its way to the Union Colony Civic Center, 701 10th Ave., where a variety of presentations beginning at 11 a.m. will honor King's legacy.

Programming is presented by the University of Northern Colorado's Marcus Garvey Cultural Center and Colorado community members.

The MLK Day celebration, sponsored by UNC, the city of Greeley, the city's Human Relations Commission and Aims Community College, is free and open to the public.

2018 is an important one as it highlights the 50th anniversary of the assassination of King on April 4, 1968. It also celebrates the founding of the King Center on June 26, 1968. The theme established by the King Center is "MLK50 Forward: Together We Win with Love for Humanity." This is also the theme of the Greeley celebration. In addition, the 2018 Black History Month theme, "African Americans in Times of War," is incorporated into the Greeley celebration.
