UNC Career Service Offers Resource, Tips for Internships

A quick internet search on ‘internship warning' reveals multiple cautionary tales. Thankfully, UNC has a resource that can help you rapidly determine fair internships and opportunities through Career Services. You can seek information on a possible internship through Handshake or schedule a meeting with a Career Services Counselor.

Here are some tips as you see opportunities for internships:

  • Remember, just because you may have received a presentation or viewed an ad about an internship on campus, it does not necessarily mean the company has a good history or reputation. It is always in your best interest to research a company prior to accepting an internship.
  • It's important for a student to understand that all internships are not created equal, and it's important to research the company before agreeing to sign up for the internship. Some advertised paid internships will barely pay you a minimum wage and result in little if any work experience that will directly impact your educational resume. These internships are often not really internships at all, but an opportunity for businesses to recruit cheap labor from students.
  • Other companies may pay a reasonable wage or provide work experience, but the hidden costs to the student such as up-front fees, a requirement to pay your own travel costs, or use your own vehicle while working effectively reduce the payment to under minimum wage.
  • Some internships are unpaid, but that in itself does not guarantee that the experience you receive will translate to valuable knowledge in your field of study.
