You enrolled in summer classes, but you don’t want to bother with grocery shopping, cooking, and doing dishes. What should you do? UNC Dining Services has a solution! Purchase a meal plan and some Dining Dollars so you can stay on campus.

Are the dining rooms open during the summer?
Yes, we’re open! During the academic year, we focus mainly on feeding UNC students (along with quite a few faculty and staff)… BUT, summers are a little different. In the summer, our main focus “switches gears” to feeding summer conference guests. UNC students (and faculty and staff) are still welcome to dine with us, but there is definitely a different population in the dining room during the summer.
There are 2 dining locations open during the summer that accept meal plans. Holmes Dining Hall is the main summer dining room, and the University Center.
Will the dining rooms be open for every meal?
Yes and No. Because the dining rooms are open mainly for summer conference guests, we have to schedule our hours around the conference dates. That can get a bit confusing, so just know that there are specific days/hours when the dining rooms should always be open.
Holmes Dining Hall will be open for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner– Monday through Friday. They will be open on the weekends only if there are conference groups scheduled.
The UC Food Court will be open for Lunch – Monday through Friday. They will be open for Breakfast and Dinner if there are conference groups scheduled… and the same goes for their weekends.
Now, as much as we would like to promise that we’ll be open for every meal, we just can’t. There will always be a few days/meals that the dining rooms will have to close (mostly due to low counts). It doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, we will make sure and have the latest updated schedule on the Dining Services website. It’s always a good idea to check the website when you’re thinking about heading over to eat in the dining room during the summer.
What are the dinning room hours in the summer?
The hours are a bit different than during the academic year, so we recommend you take a look before you decide which meal plan to purchase. We don’t want you buying too many meals if you’re not going to be able to make it to the dining room when we’re open! A complete schedule of hours for each location (both dining room and retail) is listed on our website.
Can I purchase a meal plan and or Dining Dollars during the summer?
Yes and Yes!! Just remember that summer meal plans are active during summer sessions only, and they don’t carry forward to Fall. Summer meal plans can be used starting Thursday, June 1st through Friday, August 4th. Keep those dates in mind when you’re choosing the number of meals to purchase.
Summer Dining Dollars are a little different… they are good only for a little longer and can be used starting Monday, May 8th through Sunday, August 13th. Again, balances do not carry forward to Fall, so make sure you use them all before they expire.

Where can I use my Dining Dollars this summer?
There are several Retail Dining locations open at the University Center this summer: Einstein Bros® Bagels, Subway®, Munchy Mart, and Bears Mo’Jo Coffee Co. Dining Dollars can also be used in most of our vending machines across campus. Just remember that summer Dining Dollars do not carry forward to Fall.
