Filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), is one of the most important steps students and families can take to help pay for a college education. And, with the pandemic, many students and families have faced hardships that may impacted their financial situation. UNC encourages all students to complete the 2021-22 FAFSA to receive as much financial aid assistance for your college education.

UNC has many scholarships that actually require a student to have a FAFSA on file. To be eligible for these scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study, students need to submit a  FAFSA before March 1, 2021.

FAFSA Instructions

  1. Complete your FAFSA with the Mobile App or Online through
  2. Obtain your FSA ID at
  3. Use UNC’s School Code 001349. 
  4. Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to import your tax information accurately and save time filling it out. Using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool lowers your chances of being selected for verification.

The FAFSA opens October 1 and students should mark their calendars and set reminders to complete before the March 1 deadline.
