NASS - Abolishment of Columbus Day and start of Indigenous People’s Day

Columbus Day, in many states, is celebrated every 10th of October and is a day to acknowledge Christopher Columbus, the Italian explorer, accredited by some historians as the ‘first’ explorer of the Americas. This day commemorates a day of ‘discovery,’ but to many, a day of atrocity, not to mention inaccuracy.

Indigenous People's Day 2020

Indigenous People’s Day is recognized on the second Monday of October. What began as a counter-celebration of the resistance and resilience of the indigenous communities of the United States in protest of Columbus Day. Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus, is often touted as the “founder” of the Americas, however, not only is this narrative inaccurate it is damaging and contributes to the erasure and violence of Indigenous peoples, historically and contemporarily.

The COVID-19 pandemic has uprooted many of our hopes and plans for this Fall semester. As we persist through these difficult times, we are reminded of the strength and courage of our ancestors. During difficult moments in our histories, resistance foods were born as a method to persevere and adapt.
