Professional/Academic Experience

Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) Franklin is a Professor in the Department of Hispanic Studies at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado, coordinating the TESOL/CLD undergraduate teacher education program.   At UNC, she previously served as Interim Chair (2015-2017), Director of the School of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies (2005-2009), and Director of the Center for Language Arts Education (2001-2005).

 Dr. Franklin has received $5,685,000 in federal and state grants. Most recently (2011-2017), she was Principal Investigator for a $1,800,000 National Professional Development grant, Math and Science Teaching for English Learners, from the U.S. Department of Education. She has published articles in various academic journals, including the TESOL Quarterly, Language Arts, Reading Teacher, and Teaching Exceptional Children. In addition, Dr. Franklin edited a book, Learning to Read and Write in More than One Language: Lessons for Teachers (TESOL, 1999), published two book chapters, and has completed numerous grant-related research reports. She served as a member of the Board of Directors of TESOL, Inc. from 2007-2010.

Dr. Franklin received her Ph.D. from Indiana University (1984) and has worked at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1995-2001) and the University of North Dakota (1985-1995) prior to coming to the University of Northern Colorado (2001-current).
