Academic Accommodations

The Disability Resource Center provides access, accommodations, and advocacy for UNC students who have documented disabilities. Academic needs are determined by the documentation and a student interview. Students seeking accommodations should contact our office at 970-351-2289 to schedule an appointment with a staff member. This is regardless of whether they have ever used accommodations before, have a recent or older diagnosis, or just want to learn more about possible academic accommodations. Any documentation can be submitted prior to or at this meeting (see Documentation Guidelines for more detailed information). If you do not yet have documentation, we can also try to connect you with the correct resources, both on and off campus.

You will learn skills for breaking down big assignments and planning your study time. Bring a planner! Click the link above to get scheduled with a staff member now.

How the Disability Resource Center Evaluates and Responds to Requests for Academic Accommodations

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) at UNC engages in a collaborative and interactive process with its students individually to determine appropriate accommodations.  Academic needs are determined by documentation submitted by the student and a student interview.  As part of the interactive process, when necessary, DRC will seek information from faculty about the academic requirements essential to the course or program for which the student seeks an accommodation, any licensure requirements directly related to course or program, and other relevant information specific to nature of the course or program.  When doing so, DRC will inquire of faculty the academic requirements (or the licensing requirements) that are essential to the course or program. This information is used to inform the decision of DRC about whether, after considering other alternatives and their feasibility, cost, and effect on the academic course or program, the requested accommodation (or alternative accommodations (if any)) would result in lowering academic standards and/or involve a fundamental alteration of the course or program. DRC will document its conclusions regarding such accommodations.
