On Being a Bear

Every student has the potential and talent to succeed; and for UNC’s student community, there is no lack of success or opportunity for success. However, we know that the success of our students is not achieved alone. Behind every success story, you will find a team of faculty, coaches and academic advisors. You will also find generous donors who believe in supporting the scholarships and programs that enable students to lead, learn and succeed.

Senior Director of Development Darin Thrun joined UNC in 2017 to connect these donors to our current students. He relies on his experience as a former coach to help inspire the success made possible through philanthropy and build the relationships to sustain that success in the future. Prior to becoming a Bear, Darin spent time in the University of California, Irvine athletics development office gaining the experience and insight he now applies to the team at UNC.

When you meet Darin, you will see that his passion for higher education and philanthropy is undeniable; and his appreciation and commitment to UNC – genuine. It’s no surprise then, that his favorite spot on campus is the first floor of Gunter Hall. Many of UNC’s older alumni will remember Gunter as the campus gym – a history commemorated in the athletic memorabilia that lines the building’s halls. Today it is home to UNC’s College of Natural and Health Sciences – the perfect blending of UNC’s academic and athletic tradition.

No matter what someone's philanthropic capacity may be, everyone should consider becoming involved and invested in UNC. Once you step foot on campus and have that interaction with someone here, you immediately feel a connection. UNC is an unbelievable collection of students, faculty and staff that merit support. Walk though campus, attend an athletic event, see a theatre performance in Gray Hall or Frasier…you’ll be glad you did.
