COVID-19: News and Campus Updates

Advisor Requirements

Each Recognized Student Organization is required to have an advisor who is employed as faculty, staff, or graduate assistant at least half time (20 hours/week). If you are currently an advisor or thinking about becoming one, check out the resources and FAQ's below for helpful information.

Getting Started

Once you've agreed to serve as an advisor, you may be asked to complete Campus Security Agent (CSA) Training. This training covers your responsibilities for reporting criminal activity and is required for compliance with the Clery Act.

Advisors are responsible for contacting UNC Police and setting up an appointment to complete their CSA training. If you have already completed CSA training, you will not have to repeat it.

Setting Expectations

To offer appropriate support and get to know the group, advisors should meet with RSO members and officers to discuss expectations. To help guide the conversation, you may wish to use the Cooperative Advising Checklist. This checklist covers common advising scenarios, and can serve as a good starting point to develop a productive advising relationship.

CSA Training

Advisors are required to complete their initial CSA training in person the first year. After that, advisors must complete an annual refresher quiz online.

Advisors are encouraged to attend advisor events throughout the academic year, however these events are not required.
