Study Abroad in Aoyama, Japan
Aoyama Gakuin University is located in Tokyo, Japan. It was founded in 1874 and has a current student population of approximately 19,400. It is home to nine academic departments including courses in literature, education, psychology, economics, law, business, politics, and cultural studies. Aoyama Gakuin strives to provide academic programs which enhance world views, connect people, and cultivate human resources to build a better society.
Tokyo is Japan’s capital and largest city. It is home to more than 12 million people. In Tokyo, one will explore how the deep-rooted traditions of Japanese society are maintained and have evolved into the world’s most high-tech and fast-paced city. In a day, one can explore Edo castle and the historical relics of its museum, be amazed by the latest inconceivable architectural achievements, and shop for the next fashion or technological trend before it hits the U.S.
Activities & Excursions
Upon arrival students will be assigned an AGU faculty adviser and a Japanese student tutor who will help with acclimation to life in Tokyo. Students have the opportunity to get involved with more than 120 athletic or general interest clubs. The international office provides 2 monthly social events or excursions for international students.
Students must first complete the UNC Study Abroad application. After they are nominated and accepted, the student will receive information on how to complete the AGU application.

Students have the opportunity to take courses taught in either English or Japanese.
Students may take intensive Japanese language courses. Students with an advanced level of Japanese language proficiency may take a variety of other courses taught in Japanese.
Students may also currently take literature, politics, economics, business, and cultural courses taught in English.
It is strongly recommended that all students have at least one year of Japanese language instruction before participating in this program.
Students will register for courses after arriving at Aoyama Gakuin during Orientation week. Those students intending to take courses in Japanese will take a placement test at this time.
Language of Instruction
To be eligible to apply, students must:
have at least a 2.75 GPA
have completed two semesters or 24 credits at UNC
have completed one year of college Japanese (recommended)
This program is open to students of all majors.
There are a limited number of spaces available each year.
