Educational Stability

The trends in school changes provide a K-12 overview of school changes from 2007-08 to 2013-14. There was a rise in the proportion of students who changed schools three or more times one year, also known as frequent school changers. There was also a decline in the number of students in foster care over this same period.

Closer looks at trends in frequent school changers by grade, race/ethnicity and gender are included below. The information reported here is descriptive. School changes are an indicator of educational stability that can be counted.

Improving educational stability of students in foster care might include reducing the number of school changes that are not in a child’s best interest and facilitating seamless transitions between schools.

These visualizations were designed to display school change data for Colorado youth in the same year they experienced an out-of-home placement with the capability to compare students by grade, race/ethnicity, and gender across the span of 2008 through 2014. The school change data is a count of the number of times a student enters a new school or re-enters a previously attended school after his or her initial enrollment for the year. Only students enrolled by Oct 1st are included in these analyses.

Use the drop down menus and pick lists on the right of each visualization to change the year and demographics depending upon what data you need. In addition to the text provided on the screen, information related to the data can be found by hovering the cursor over the different aspects of the visualizations.
