Yucatan Experience

Have the experience of a lifetime. The Summer Mexico Program gives you a chance to experience Mayan and Mexican culture first hand.

Option 1:
In the two-week (13 day) trip, spend the first three nights in Colonial Mérida where you will explore the city and all it has to offer. There you will learn about Mérida’s history by visiting museums, the Governor’s Palace and exploring the architecture of the city. Next, you will visit Lultún Cave, where you will see paintings attributed to prehispanic Maya, and the city of Maní, where you will learn of the Spanish conquest of Yucatan. Arrive in the old hacienda village of Yunkú where you will complete the service-learning component of the class by connecting with the local community. Here you will help run a camp for local children, offering them lessons in English, art, computer literacy and prehispanic culture. You’ll also teach the adults, who will then teach you elements of culture such as their language and culinary traditions. Explore and swim in the local cenotes or relax by the hacienda pool during down time. You will experience traditional Mayan meals at night and local Mayan atmosphere in the day. The trip will conclude with a two night stay in Puerto Morelos, a small fishing town on the beach with shopping, snorkeling and free time to relax.

Option 2:
This trip is provided through William Peace University and begins at the end of the UNC course (Option 1). It is a three week (21 day) option where you will spend extra time discovering both urban and rural Maya culture. You will spend time in the capital city of Mérida, where you can visit museums, churches, cathedrals and the large public zoo. Go shopping, stop by the city market, see a theater performance or try salsa dancing! Discover a henequen cooperative in Aké and meet a hammock maker in Tixkokb. Explore the beautiful Maya site of Chichén Itzá and swim in the crystal-clear waters of Cenote Ikkil. Spend time in the city of Valladolid then explore the beautiful stucco imagery of the Ek’ Balam ruins. Complete your extra week with time to relax on the beach with another night in Puerto Morelos.
