German Competitions

  • Who am I? - Level I

    Each school is allowed two competitors for German.  The student will have 1 minute to describe themselves to the judges.  Going over the time limit will negatively impact the student's score.  Possible topics include the student's interests, family, daily routine, etc.  Students will be judged on fluency, preparedness, thoroughness, pronunciation, and breadth and appropriate usage of vocabulary.  No notes will be allowed.  If an additional student is interested in competing, please contact Anna Williams after March 15 to see if there are spaces available. 

  • Show and Tell - Level II

    Each school is allowed two competitors for German.  The student will bring an object and describe it (note: object must be inanimate).  The presentation should be limited to 60-90 seconds.  Going over the time limit will negatively impact the student's score.  Students will be judged on fluency, preparedness (including being set up and ready to go when the competition begins), thoroughness, pronunciation, and breadth and appropriate usage of vocabulary.  No notes will be allowed.  If an additional student is interested in competing, please contact Anna Williams after March 15 to see if there are spaces available. 

  • Skit - Level III

    Each school is allowed TWO entries of two to five students for German.  The students will perform a simple and original presentation.  The presentations should be limited to 5 minutes.  Going over the time limit will negatively impact the group's score.  Students will be judged on fluency, blocking, dramatic interpretation, projection, pronunciation, memorization, originality, and thematic content.  If additional students are interested in competing, please contact Anna Williams after March 15 to see if there are spaces available. 

  • Memorized Poetry Recitation - Level IV

    Each school is allowed two competitors for German.  The student will recite a non-original memorized poem.  No props or notes should be used.  A copy of the poem must be submitted to the judges.  The presentation should be limited to 2 minutes.  Going over the time limit will negatively impact the student's score.  Students will be judged on fluency, pronunciation, preparedness, memorization, projection, and quality of interpretation.  If an additional student is interested in competing, please contact Anna Williams after March 15 to see if there are spaces available. 

  • Extemporaneous Speech - Level V

     Each school is allowed two competitors for German.  The student will be given a topic upon which to expound.  Students will be given 2 minutes to prepare.  No notes will be allowed.  The student will speak for 2-3 minutes.  Going over the time limit will negatively impact the student's score.  Students will be judged on fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and delivery.  If an additional student is interested in competing, please contact Anna Williams after March 15 to see if there are spaces available. 

  • Extemporaneous Speech - Native Speaker Only

      Each school is allowed two competitors for German.  The student will be given  topic upon which to expound.  Students will be given 2 minutes to prepare.  No notes will be allowed.  The student will speak for 2-3 minutes.  Going over the time limit will negatively impact the student's score.  Students will be judged on fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and delivery.  If an additional student is interested in competing, please contact Anna Williams after March 15 to see if there are spaces available. If an additional student is interested in competing, please contact Anna Williams after March 15 to see if there are spaces available. 

  • Individual Talent Competition - All Levels

      Each school is allowed two competitors for German.  This activity must have cultural relevance and include a memorized introduction by the performer in the target language.  Any songs should be sung in the target language.  The performance should also be memorized.  This competition is for individual students only, but individuals may bring an accompanist who may have sheet music.  A piano will be provided upon request.  Performances should not be more than 5 minutes.  Going over the time limit will negatively impact the student's score.  Please plan accordingly as no speakers or microphones will be allowed, and if CDs, MP3s, or other music playing devices are needed, the performers are responsible for bringing them.  PLEASE NOTE: Due to space limitations, only student participants and their teachers will be allowed at the individual talent competitions.  If an additional student is interested in competing, please contact Anna Williams after March 15 to see if there are spaces available. 

  • Song/Dance Cultural Entertainment - All Levels

     Each school is allowed TWO entries of two to twenty students for German.  The performance should respectfully reflect the culture of a foreign country and should fall within the categories of singing (in the target language) and/or dancing.  This activity must include a memorized introduction by the performer in the target language (TL).  The performance must be memorized and should not exceed 10 minutes.  Going over the time limit will negatively impact the group's score.  Please plan accordingly as no speakers or microphones will be allowed, and if CDs, MP3s, or other music playing devices are needed, the performers are responsible for bringing them.  Dance performances will be judged on the quality of the TL introduction, the cultural authenticity of the dance itself, execution of steps, synchronization of dancers with accompaniment, and with each other, and stage presence.  Singing performances will be judged on the quality of the TL introduction, the cultural authenticity of the song, fluency/pronunciation, delivery (style, projection), quality of memorization, and technical execution.  Note: teachers are not allowed to perform with their students. If additional students are interested in competing, please contact Anna Williams after March 15 to see if there are spaces available. 

  • Dramatic Cultural Entertainment - All Levels

      Each school is allowed TWO entries of two to twenty students for German.  The performance should respectfully reflect the culture of a foreign country and should fall within the categories of a presentation, a dramatic excerpt from a German play, or an original skit, performed in the target language (TL).  This activity must include a memorized introduction by the performer in the target language.  The performance must be memorized and should not exceed 10 minutes.  Going over the time limit will negatively impact the group's score.  No speakers or microphones will be allowed, so please plan accordingly.  Students will be judged on the quality of the TL introduction, fluency, pronunciation, dramatic interpretation, quality of memorization, and delivery (projection, blocking, and overall smoothness of the presentation).  Note: teachers are not allowed to perform with their students.  If additional students are interested in competing, please contact Anna Williams after March 15 to see if there are spaces available. 

  • Art Competition: Paintings, Drawings, Poster Art & Sculptures Competition – All Levels

     Each school is allowed up to three competitors for German.  Entries will be judged on quality of craftsmanship, creativity, cultural relevance, and originality.  All entries must be pre-registered for this event. 

  • Videotaped Commercial Competition - All Levels

     Each school is allowed to send one commercial per level per language.  You may choose the level(s) of students - level I, II, III, IV, V, or native speaker.  Please do not mix levels in a commercial.  Commercials may be no longer than 1 minute.  Going over the time limit will have negative impact on the score.  Commercials will be judged on fluency, pronunciation, cultural relevance, delivery, blocking/choreography and originality.  In addition, the quality of the video recording will be considered.  Keep in mind the viewer should be able to tell what the product being sold is.  Commercials must be sent in wmv, mvi, or MP4 format via email or saved to disk (please do not burn DVDs) and mailed along with the Video Commercial Form.  Please review additional guidelines for video commercials found on the Video Commercial Form.  

  • Soccer - Activity

      Each school is allowed only one participant from each language.  The teams will be comprised of several students from each language from different schools.  All participants will receive a participation ribbon.  Please see Soccer Competition Release Form for more information.  The Soccer Competition Release Form must be signed and returned before the student will be allowed to play.  All soccer students must be registered by March 1.  If additional students are interested in playing, please contact Anna Williams after March 15 to see if there are spaces available.  

  • Food Tasting - Activity

     Each school is allowed one food item from each language.  Please provide food items only for tasting.  Students should bring an authentic recipe written in the foreign languages on a 6x8 card to identify their dish and a serving utensil for each item.  If the dish requires refrigeration, a cooler must be provided by the student.  Likewise, we will be unable to provide a means of reheating the dish.  This activity will allow students from all languages to present their culinary delights for tasting.
