Video Guidelines

Introduction

The University encourages the use of video to portray all aspects of campus life. These guidelines are available to help the campus understand the process of recommending a video for inclusion on the central UNC video site and external sites and to provide information about best practices in creating video.

Background

The Office of Web Communications is the contact area for promotional video and the Center for the Teaching and Enhancement of Learning (CETL) is the contact area for academic video guidance. The amount of academic video assistance available depends on the focus of the video, scope of request and the resources available.

The office of Web Communications has limited resources available for video production but can provide suggestions of vendors to use for promotional videos.

The University has four methods for displaying video to the general public: the central UNC video site,  Facebook, ItunesU and the UNorthernColorado YouTube site.  Depending on subject matter and quality, videos may be placed on all four sites.  Campus video producers are should submit YouTube videos to Web Communications for possible inclusion onto the the UNorthernColorado YouTube site rather than creating separate YouTube accounts.

Quality of Video

The type of content suitable for video varies widely. In general, promotional videos should be informational, entertaining and fit within the brand guidelines and messages.  Instructional videos reflect the wide array of research and educational interests at the university and should compliment classroom or research topics.

Submission of a video does not automatically result in publication and the university reserves the right to remove or request removal of a video from the UNC Web site, official social media page, official YouTube channel or other hosting sites.

Accessibility Standards

To ensure user accessibility, captions are required on all video content placed on any UNC Web site or YouTube channel. Web Communications or CETL will add the captions to the video player assuming a complete transcript has been submitted. An exact Word document transcript of all spoken words must be provided at the time of video submission. The video and transcript should be complete when submitted and will not be edited by Web Communications or CETL staff.

Inclusion of a Video on the UNC Web

Only UNC videos (from the central UNC video site) can be embedded on the UNC Web site.  You Tube videos should not be embedded but a link to a YouTube video can be included on a UNC Web site.

Appropriate video will be uploaded to the ItunesU site or Facebook page by Web Communications or CETL.

Inclusion of a Video on the UNC YouTube Channel

YouTube has become a prominent promotional and informational resource and the university has chosen to organize videos in one official channel rather than uploading to disparate YouTube locations.

Videos should not be uploaded to individual department YouTube channels but rather given to Web Communications to include on the official UNC YouTube channel.

Submission of Videos

Videos submitted to Web Communications or CETL will be reviewed for professional quality and adherence to guidelines and, if accepted, added to one or more of the following sites: the central UNC video site; ItunesU; Facebook; and the UNC YouTube channel.

Video designed to supplement classroom or research activities should be submitted to CETL for inclusion into the appropriate learning modality.

In some cases, Web Communications or CETL may be able to assist with the video production (camera work, editing, post production and duplication) and can be contacted for discussion of the project.

Video Submission Details

Please provide the highest quality file in AVI, MOV, MP4 or MPEG format. The file will be converted using the following specifications:

  • Data Rate: 500 total (video + audio)
  • Frames: 30

All Web videos will be streamed in a standard UNC media player look.

Files can be received via Bear Drive, Flash drive, UNC FTP site or data DVD. Please do not submit video on a video DVD. DVD-Video discs hold digitized movies or video programs and are played using a DVD player hooked up to a standard television receiver. The actual video file needed for processing is more difficult to remove from this format so simply burn the video file to a data DVD. To ensure user accessibility, captions are required on all video content placed on any UNC Web site or YouTube channel. Web Communications or CETL will add the captions to the video player. An exact Word document transcript of all spoken words must be provided at the time of video submission.

The video must comply with all applicable UNC, state and federal laws for intellectual property rights, including FERPA, copyright and trademarks policies.

The video review, captioning and player process is quite time consuming. All efforts will be made to complete the process within two – three weeks.

Using the video

Once the video is live on the UNC server, the embed code for the video will be given to the submitter or Web author to allow inclusion on a UNC Web site if desired. Only UNC videos can be embedded on UNC Web site. 

Appropriate video will be uploaded to the ItunesU site.

YouTube videos should not be embedded but a link to a YouTube video can be included on a UNC Web site.

Videos appropriate for Facebook will be uploaded by a Facebook administrator.

If requested, a video DVD will be provided. There will be a charge for volume duplication of DVDs.

Best Practices
