Social Media Coordinator (Student Employment Position)

This position serves as an important representative of the university by communicating with audiences via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other social media outlets.
Requirements:Candidate should have experience working with social media.  Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above.

Job Responsibilities:

University Image

    • Increase number of likes on Facebook page and followers on Twitter through purposeful strategies and best practice approaches
    • Develop strategies to market events through regular meetings with Director of Web Communications and University Writer

Program Attendance and Engagement

    • Attend agreed-upon UNC events for posts and tweets
    • Exhibit Bear Pride
    • Stay informed about campus news and events

Tweeting, Posting, and More

    • Craft intentional messages about the university’s events, news and services and post them on social media sites
    • Develop surveys and polls for university Facebook Page
    • Post 7 - 14 times weekly on the university Facebook Page
    • In partnership with News and Media Relations student, tweet 1 - 3 times daily about the university
    • Coordinate with student video assistant to post to YouTube channel
    • Shoot informal videos of agreed-upon topics for social media
    • Post photos, both spontaneous and planned
    • Post and tweet random UNC fun items

Committee involvement

    • Attend semester meetings about university social media efforts
    • Attend university informal social media users lunches when available

Strategy Development

    • Collaborate with University Relations and Student Engagement to determine how to build student developmental assistance into social media communities
    • Brainstorm about ways to improve social media presence


The person hired in this position will work independently and communicate on behalf of the university.  This person will understand how to refer certain types of posts to appropriate university personnel in case of a serious personal or campus emergency situation.

Expectation details:

  • Administrative
    • Update Ursa  time sheet on the 15th and 30th of the month
    • Respond promptly to email or voice mail communication
  • Professional Behavior
    • Block or hide negative posts on Twitter or Facebook quickly
    • Never share departmental passwords for social media accounts
    • Meet regularly with supervisor to provide updates on progress of projects and postings
    • Use appropriate  language, spelling and grammar in posts and appropriate format in tweets
    • Respond in a timely and positive manner to comments and questions
    • Ask for guidance when uncertain of response or situation
  • Research & Development
    • Research use of Social Media in higher education and marketing to develop plan for departmental social media use in the future
    • Conduct informal research with UNC peers
  • Supervision
    • Keep in close contact with supervisors
    • Express true opinions on social media matters
