Web Developer Job Description
The Web developer at the University of Northern Colorado is an essential member of the Web Communications team. The team consists of a Director, Web Master, Web Developer, Designer and Photographer/Videographer. This team works closely with academic and administrative departments, Marketing and Public Relations to develop and maintain top level and departmental Web sites as well as video and HTML emails.
This job offers an opportunity to work with an excellent team and on a variety of projects using a wide range of skills. A sense of humor is an important trait to bring to this position.
Web Communications adheres to best practices in Web design, usability, accessibility and coding.
An Associate’s Degree in related technical field required, bachelor’s degree related technical field preferred and two years experience in Web development area required. This is a full time, professional exempt staff position and employees are expected to work from the office.
Duties include:
- Develop and maintain various University Web sites, including online forms and database-driven applications, in accordance to best practices for usability, security and accessibility.
- Assist users in development or revision of sites to meet business goals.
- Develop and maintain documentation for user needs.
- Assist campus Web authors in developing and maintaining departmental Web sites, including guidance on site structure and goal planning.
- Develop sites or targeted pages using best practices for analytics tracking.
- Manage internal Web Communications Apache server, applications and MySQL database.
- Manage Google mini search appliance, including configuration of appliance and analysis of results.
- Perform standard Web administrative tasks such as asset management, log review and file cleanup.
- Communication with Information Technology to understand network environment and implement new technologies or procedures
- Research and recommend software and technical solutions to improve Web presence for university.
- Participate in planning and maintenance of social network presence.
- Participate in creative brainstorming during planning of new sites.
- Provide best practice guidance in a Windows server environment with a basic understanding of web servers, database servers and application server technology.
Depending on skill level, other duties may include:
- Basic support for Mac computers in office
- Flash site development
- Video editing
Required knowledge and skills:
Must have advanced skill in:
- XHTML and CSS coding, including thorough documentation
- Adobe Dreamweaver
- One scripting language; ASP preferred
- Understanding of best practices of usability and content organization
- Solving of technical problems
- Browser compatibility design
Must be proficient in:
- XML
- Photoshop
- W3C web design guidelines and Section 508/WAI accessibility issues
- Database programming for Web applications
- Search engine optimization techniques
- Mac OS server applications and administration
- Using social networking sites
- Clear and consistent development of documentation
- Research and evaluation of hardware and software solutions
Interpersonal skills must include:
- Effective team skills and positive attitude

- Ability to communicate technical answers to nontechnical staff
- Ability to learn UNC system environment and work with Information Technology staff to accomplish projects

- Knowledge of security coding required for online forms and applications
- Search Engine Optimization
- Experience with a Content Management System
- Skills in ActionScript 3.0
- Experience in Mac desktop maintenance
- Experience using Adobe Premiere or Final Cut video software
- Networking experience
Salary Range:
$43,000 - $45,000
