Nancy Turner, psychologist, Counseling Center

One week ago today hurt and heartache shattered a campus 1500 miles away. Tonight we gather to send healing and hope to the students, faculty and staff of Virginia Tech University. And we gather to take a stand against fear and despair and destruction.

We gather to console each other and to say that we will not ignore loss and pain and death.

Candlelight vigils say that light shines in the darkness, hope outlives heartache.

I am one of the therapists at the UNC counseling Center and I came tonight to stand with you against hate, and for healing. I have also come to offer you the services of the Counseling Center. We are located in Cassidy Hall, just one floor above the Health Center. We are here to help you. In the audience tonight are several of my fellow counselors. Following the vigil we will be standing on the right side of this stage, if any of you would like to speak to one of us.

If any of you are confused, or angry, or depressed, or stressed by the tragic events at Virginia Tech, please know that you are not alone. Know that your Counseling Center wants to help you as you sort out your thoughts and feelings. Please call or walk in for an appointment.

Tragic events cause many to seek out faith communities. Tonight several members of area faith organizations are present to offer assistance. If anyone here tonight would like to visit with one of these pastors or youth leaders following this vigil, please feel free to do so. I would ask the faith representatives, if you are not talking with someone at the close of the vigil would you please gather to the left of the stage so that students can easily find you to share thoughts and concerns.

Beth Israel Synagogue was not sure that they would be able to have a representative here this evening. If there is anyone here who would like to talk with a Rabbi, please visit with me following the vigil and I will help you get in touch with one.

As I look out across this group tonight, I already see the light of compassion and care shining in so many hearts and faces. The candles we light soon will be but an external manifestation of your inner commitment to peace and hope. Thank you for coming; thank you for caring.
