My name is Tim Hernandez, and I'm a junior English major with emphases in Secondary Education and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). I am a first generation student who was born and raised in the wonderful state of Colorado, so Greeley is right at home! Further, I chose UNC because of the diverse and energetic communities on campus which fill the environment with a positive buzz every day. I am currently heavily involved on campus by being a McNair Scholar where I'm writing an Undergraduate thesis about Shakespearean literature and modern rap music, a writer for the UNC Mirror (our student newspaper), a Multicultural Outreach and Recruitment Ambassador where I specifically work with students of diverse backgrounds to increase diversity at UNC, and as the Group Tour Lead for the Office of Admissions where I work directly with middle and high school visits to our campus! Outside of UNC, I also teach Coding and Computer Science at the Fred Tjardes School of Innovation, a new school in Greeley, Colorado! After my degree, however, I would love to be a middle or high school teacher in multicultural communities or demographic areas where students don't speak English as their first language. ¡Si Se Puede!
1. My favorite author/playwright is Lin-Manuel Miranda, lyricist behind things like Hamilton and In The Heights!
2. I have a personal library of over 600 books!
3. I once got to meet Chance the Rapper!
My favorite spot on campus is the courtyard in the middle of Ross Hall- the leaves during autumn are unparalleled!
Get involved on campus! This is not only a great way to make friends and establish a community here at UNC, but also a great way to make your resumé stand apart from the rest once you graduate!
