Colorado Springs, Colorado
My name is Karen! In English that's pronounced "care-in", and in Español my name is pronounced "kah-ren". I was born in Los Angeles, California, and I am a daughter of two immigrants. My father is from Leon, Mexico and my mother is from Nagarote, Nicaragua. We moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where I've resided until I moved into my new home - an underrated town by the name of Greeley, Colorado. I was a junior in high school when I first toured UNC; it was at that moment I knew that this was where I belonged. I started as a theatre studies major with a minor in music - little did I know I would change my major to music! Currently, I am a music business major with an emphasis in vocal jazz studies.
In my time at UNC, I have had the honor to participate in various clubs and organizations here on campus. I have been active within the Residence Hall Association, National Residence Hall Honorary, the Jazz Education Network, the chartering of two a capella groups, and multicultural sorority on campus. All these opportunities have enriched my life with travel, friendships, as well as professional and academic success.
While at UNC, I have discovered my passion for leadership. I wish to seek a career in higher education and student affairs. If it had not been for the experiences I have had here at UNC, graduate school wouldn't have ever crossed my mind. I'm inspired!
I am grateful for my opportunities here and can not wait to see where life takes me after I walk across the stage and receive my diploma.
1. Since being at UNC, I have traveled to 11 different states in the span of two years for various academic and leadership opportunities. All of this travel would not have happened without UNC. This also means my first plane ride happened in this time frame, and that was when I flew to Louisville, Kentucky!
2. I have never lived off campus and this will be my fourth year in the residence halls!
3. My favorite meal the dining hall serves is the spud-tacular bar! They serve potatoes in various different ways and offer a plethora of different toppings for you to put on your choice of potato.
My favorite place on campus is Skinner Music Library. There are a lot of hidden treasures and places to hide in there.
It's not a race! Take your time to explore your interests! It's okay to change your mind a billion times! There will be people there to help you find your way. Ask all the questions!
