What is the Post-9/11 GI Bill?
The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
Am I Eligible?
You may be eligible if you Served at least 90 aggregate days on active duty after September 10, 2001, and you are still on active duty or were honorably-
- discharged from the active duty; or
- released from active duty and placed on the retired list or temporary disability retired list; or
- released from active duty and transferred to the Fleet Reserve or Fleet Marine Corps Reserve; or
- released from the active duty for further service in a reserve component of the Armed Force
The following active duty qualifies for Post-9/11 GI Bill eligibility:
- All Title 10 active duty supporting named contingency operations
- Title 32 service for the purpose of organizing, administering, recrutions, instructing, or training the National Guard (not payable until October 1, 2011)
- Title 32 service under section 502(f) for the purpose of responding to a national emergency (not payable until October 1, 2011)
- All voluntary active duty, with the exception of active duty for medical care and medical evaluation
All forms of inactive duty training (drills and funeral honors), as well as annual training do not qualify for the Post-9/11 GI Bill education benefit.
You may also be eligible if you were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability and you sewed 30 continuous days after September 10,2001.

Yellow Ribbon Program
You may be eligible to participate in the Yellow Ribbon program if you are covered at 100% by the Post-9/11 GI Bill. You must provide a Certificate of Eligibility in order to participate. The Yellow Ribbon program is intended to cover out-of-state tuition charges for students incurring such.
- Please note: active duty service members and spouses of active duty service members are not eligible to participate in the Yellow Ribbon program.
How much will I receive?
Based on your length of active duty service, you are entitled to a PERCENTAGE of the following:

Tuition and Fees
VA will pay all registration fees. Registration fees include all fees created by registering for a course (Note: UNC Student health insurance is covered because of state mandate requiring students to have current health insurance. However, if currently insured, the university insurance can be waived.)
Fees not covered:
- Parking pass
- Food
- Lodging
- Fines
- Printing charges
- Other charges not required by registration
Housing Stipend
Monthly housing allowance equal to the basic allowance for housing payable to a military E-5 with dependents, in the same zip code as your school (paid to you); 80639- $1,152.00 (same rate as CSU) Payments are generally received, on the first of the month, for the month prior. Housing stipend will only pay for the dates of the term enrolled. For example: Fall term begins on August 22nd. You will be paid for 9 days of BAH on September 1st. (Note: The VA calculates every month as 30 days.)
Stipend is also calculated by prorating housing allowance by the student’s rate of pursuit (rounded to the nearest tenth) Example: A student training at a rate of pursuit of 75% would receive 80% of the BAH rate

Books and Supplies
Yearly books and supplies stipend of up to $1000 per calendar year (paid to you). The book and supply stipend is paid at the rate of $41.67 per credit hour. This should be the first payment you receive every semester.
How many months of assistance can I receive?
Generally, you may receive up to 36 months of entitlement under the Post-3/11 GI Bill.
How long am l eligible?
You will be eligible for benefits for 15 years from your last period of active duty of at least 90 consecutive days. If you were released for a service-connected disability after at least 30 days of continuous service, you will also be eligible for benefits for 15 years.
