Certification Steps

So, how do I start my journey at UNC?

 

Step 1.  Apply to UNC (easy, right?)

Step 2.  Apply for your VA education benefits.

First Timers: First time using your VA education benefits? Complete and submit an application for VA Education Benefits (VA Form 22-1990) to the VA through VONAPP.

Or

Seasoned Learners: Transferring to UNC from another Institution? Complete and submit a Request for Change of Program or Place of Training (VA Form 22-1995) to the VA through VONAPP.

Step 3. Enroll! That's right, enroll in your classes. You should speak to your advisor to get your PIN number to do so on URSA.

Step 4. After you enroll, submit your UNC VA Certification Worksheet.

  1. Click here.
  2. Click on URSA on the left side and log in to your account.
  3. If you do not have a log in name or p/w you will be receiving one once you are accepted to UNC via email. Make sure we have your correct email!

  4. Click on the Student tab.
  5. On the left side you will find Important Links. Select this link and find Veterans Certification Request.
  6. Complete this form. Be sure to read and follow the applications directions.
  7. Click Submit. Congrats! You have met your first objective to getting your degree.

**Important! Complete each step before continuing onto the next.**

 

Also, Step 4 must be completed each semester you plan to attend school.

MGIB (Ch 30) members: you must verify your attendance every month through the VA on their Web Automated Verification of Enrollment, W.A.V.E. or by calling 1-888-GIBILL-1.

 

Additional information:

Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) benefits for tuition and fee payments are sent directly to the school. Housing allowance, kickers and book stipends are sent directly to the students.
Spouses and Active Duty students utilizing Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits will not receive the housing allowance, book stipend, or kickers while the sponsor is still on active duty.

GI Bill benefits are paid in arrears, which means that payments for January won’t be received until February. Housing allowance benefits are also calculated based on the dates for each semester. The payment in September will be for the last few days of class in August, the payment in February for the partial month of January, and so on.

Keep in mind, the VA can be slow, especially if this is your first semester using benefits. Be patient but feel free to contact us if you think something may have gone awry.
