Butler-Hancock Hall

History

Built in 1974 to replace the inadequate Physical Education facilities of Gunter Hall, the facility was built with an olympic size pool and has a field house that can accomodate over 5,000 spectators. It was also used as the campus recreation center prior to the existence of the new facility. A new storage addition and wrestling room addition were added in 2002.

Named for

This building is named for Lonis C. "Pete" Butler and John W. Hancock, Jr., both members of the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame. Butler was a former UNC basketball star player and also led the 1934-1935 tennis team to a regional second place standing. He eventually became a faculty member and served as the head of the school's physical education division from 1956-1963. John W. Hancock, Jr. was an athletic legend at UNC. He was an all American lineman from the University of Iowa who became the UNC football coach in 1934. This team was one of the best in UNC history. Hancock went on to coach wrestling and serve as a faculty member from 1932-1966.

Current Use

Butler-Hancock is home to the university's swimming pool and gym where general physical education and athletic events occur. The building also houses the offices for the physical education and athletic departments.
