Candelaria Hall

History

Completed in 1973 and originally known as Classroom building #2., The building was constructed for classroom and office spaces for liberal arts.

 

Named for

The building is named for Martin Candelaria, who was a professor of Spanish from 1948-1963. He also developed UNC's Language Arts center. Artist and teacher Leo Tanguma and his students created a mural of an account of Martin's life and Hispanic culture which was installed in Candelaria Hall in the north stairwell.

 

Current Use

This building is still a classroom/office building. The administrative offices of Journalism and Sociology are housed here, as well as the School of Modern Languages & Cultural Studies, School of Communication, School of Social Sciences and the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences.
