GUIDELINES FOR ATHLETIC TRAINING STUDENT TEAM TRAVEL

The following is a list the guidelines for an athletic training student traveling with a University of Northern Colorado athletic team:

  1. Only those athletic training students who have demonstrated the maturity and competence, and are in their fourth or fifth semester, will be assigned to travel. While traveling with an assigned team you must follow all UNC athletic training policies and procedures, those policies set by the coach as well as following the NATA Code of Professional Practice.
  2. UNC athletic training students must meet with their ACI prior to team travel.
  3. UNC athletic training students are required to travel with the following:
    • stocked kit
    • insurance and personal information team file
    • phone numbers of the medical and athletic training staff at the host institution
    • phone list of supervising ACI & other pertinent contacts
  4. UNC athletic training students must communicate with the coach prior to team travel to become aware of time schedules and dress codes. Athletic training students must present themselves professionally at all times, at a minimum must wear their nametag and athletic training shirt.
  5. Upon arriving at the host institution or site, the athletic training student must communicate with the host ATC, introduce themselves and determine how to get a hold of them prior to, during, and after the event. In the event of an ATC not being available you are only allowed to perform tasks and procedures that are consistent with those tasks of a first responder and/or a qualified coach. Determine the availability of their physicians as well.
  6. If an injury occurs, you must refer to the host ATC or MD, for assistance in evaluation and determination of the athlete’s status for return to participation or referral. You must also contact the supervising ATC of that sport ASAP prior to return.
  7. In the event of an injury requiring diagnostic testing (x-rays, referral to MD) you must bring back copies of all paper work and diagnostics so our team physician can review them for follow up.

athletic training STUDENTS ACTING AS A FIRST RESPONDER

Purpose:

To outline the athletic training students responsibilities when traveling with a University of Northern Colorado athletic team, without the direct supervision of an Approved Clinical Instructor.

Team Travel by an athletic training student without the direct auditory and visual supervision by a University of Northern Colorado Athletic Training Education Program Approved Clinical Instructor (ACI), is contrary to CAATE Standards and Guidelines. Therefore any athletic training students not in direct auditory and visual supervision of a UNC ACI may only perform tasks and procedures that are consistent with those tasks of a first responder and /or a qualified coach.

To include; advanced first aid and lifesaving techniques, basic athletic training techniques (such as those taught in a prevention and care course). For example, preventive taping, wrapping and bracing, preventative stretching, superficial modality applications of heat/ cold, and basic injury evaluation with proper referral to host ATC, physician, dentist or emergency facility, would be duties that you would perform.

Unsupervised athletic training students as defined above, may not perform any of the following duties: apply modalities such as electrical stimulation or ultrasound, distribute over the counter medication, evaluation other than for EMS referral, and rehabilitation.

In the event that a competition is being held at a site where there is no certified athletic trainer present to provide direct supervision, a UNC athletic training student will not be traveling.

Appropriate auditory and visual supervision is to be considered only if an UNC ACI or host Certified Athletic Trainer is physically present during team practices and competitions, and able to intervene on behalf of the student and/ or athlete. A host Certified Athletic Trainer may supervise a athletic training student’s field experience only, but must be physically present to intervene and consult, they will not be able to evaluate clinical proficiencies. Without the presence of an ACI from the University of Northern Colorado or its affiliate sites hours will not be counted.

I have read and understand the guidelines and requirements of athletic training student travel and team supervision in the absence of a UNC ACI, and agree to abide by all of the policies and procedures outlined. Failure to abide by these guidelines and policies and procedures may result in discipline and possible dismissal from the clinical program.
