ADMISSION CRITERIA

THE DESIGNATION OF ATHLETIC TRAINING AS A MAJOR DOES NOT ASSURE ADMISSION TO THE CLINICAL ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM. THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS ADMITTED TO THIS PROGRAM IS LIMITED. STUDENTS MUST PREPARE A SEPARATE APPLICATION TO THE CLINICAL ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM DURING THE FALL OF THEIR SOPHOMORE YEAR.

APPLICANTS WILL BE EVALUATED FOR ADMITTANCE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING:

  1. Available Openings
  2. Grade Point Average (2.8 minimum at UNC at the time of application)
  3. Grades* and/or performance in these specific courses
    • SES 181 Introduction to Athletic Training
    • CHEM 108 Biochemistry OR
    • CHEM  281 or 111 (Principles of Chemistry I)
    • SES 220 Anatomical Kinesiology
    • SES 380 Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries
    • SES 233 Advanced First Aid and CPR or current card
    • BIO 110 Principles in Biology
    • BIO 245 Intro to Human Anatomy and Physiology
    • *All courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better to be considered for acceptance.
  4. Related Experience (not mandatory)
  5. Performance during athletic training room observations.
  6. Complete three, two-hour observations in the training room.
  7. Demonstrate a desire to enter the curriculum program and pursue the field of athletic training as a career.
  8. Submit completed application along with three letters of recommendation, two of which must be authored by faculty of UNC.
  9. Interview (panel interview consists of the full-time athletic training faculty, one non-athletic training SES faculty member, and students and/or graduate assistants already in the program)

In addition, prospective athletic training students will be administered a written exam designed as a research tool to evaluate the quality of the pre-requisite education and it's correlation to success as an athletic training student.  Results of the exam will in no way affect the applicants admission into the clinical program.

Upon acceptance into the clinical program, students must obtain a physical exam that indicates their ability to meet the requirements of the Technical Standards as well as their overall health.

Applications will only be accepted during the fall semester to begin the professional clinical program in the Spring.
