GILBERT CARBAJAL

A native of northern Colorado, Gil Carbajal was an administrator, counselor and professor in public education for 31 years with the Poudre School District and Colorado State University before joining UNC’s board of trustees.

Upon graduation from high school, he served in Japan as an Army paratrooper during the Korean War (1954-57). He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from UNC and master’s and doctoral degrees in Educational Administration/Counseling from CSU, with a dissertation topic of Career Education.

Carbajal’s teaching experience has included grade levels from kindergarten to doctoral courses at the university level. As an administrator and counselor he’s designed and implemented a variety of innovative alternative education, dropout prevention and retrieval programs, many of which are model programs on state, regional and national levels. He has several publications in national journals and regional newspapers.

His many awards include the Fort Collins Jaycee Outstanding Educator, Colorado Jaycee Outstanding Educator (Honorable Mention), the Phi Delta Kappa Innovator Award and the city of Fort Collins’ Human Relations Award.

He currently is semi-retired, working as a business and educational consultant. His presentations include topics on the American free enterprise economic system, success skills, motivation, regular and alternative education, Christian doctrine, human relations and the Hispanic culture.

Linda, his wife, is a former high school counselor and currently the Director of the UNC Cumbres Program. They have four children and 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
