7 Pecan Hickory

(Carya illinoinensis )

The pecan tree on the Central Campus Loop (6) is one of three pecan hickories on campus, and this tree is under consideration for State Champion status by the Colorado Tree Coalition. You aren’t likely to see a nut harvest from these trees, as Colorado’s dry climate doesn’t allow the pecans to fully develop. This tree is more adaptable to the moister climates of the southern United States, and it is one of our state’s most unique trees.
