31 Horse Chestnut

This tree is native to the Balkan region and has large white flowering panicles. There are many cultivars developed from this species and the red-flowering varieties are very popular in the landscape. This tree is subject to drought injury and leaf scorch. If you have a chance to study the tree after the leaves fall, you’ll see that the leaf scars have a distinct horseshoe shape with seven “nail holes.”
