2010-2011 PB Orientation/Program Handbook for Secondary Students for K-12 Students

If you are going to Take EDFE 554, Secondary Practicum in the Fall of 2012, you must submit a request for placement by March 15.

This program is for individuals seeking first time teacher licensure, who already have completed a baccalaureate degree in one of the following majors: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, English, French, Geography, German, History, Mathematics, Physics, Social Science, Spanish, Theatre Arts, or related fields. Students will have their transcripts evaluated for major content; additional content classes may be required.  

 

Admission Deadlines

  • Summer admission: April 1
  • Fall admission: August 1
  • Spring admission: November 1

 

Admissions

  • Each of the subject areas makes its own admission decision. Please contact the appropriate advisor to discuss admission. Different program areas may have various content courses GPA admission requirements. In addition to your content advisor (above) your Professional Teacher Education Program (PTEP) advisor is Mr. John Haefeli.
  • Applicants must have an 3.0 GPA for admission in the last 60 credit hours of course work or will take the GRE and score a minimum of 1000 on the Verbal and Quantitatve sections (combined).
  • Different areas may have various content courses GPA requirements.
  • Students must prove that they are proficient in English by having an English Composition or Writing Proficiency in their transcripts or by the time they student teach.  If a student would like to take the CLEP test (Writing Proficiency with English Essay) they may contact Career Services at 970-351-2127.

  • Tuition for any Content Courses are at the Graduate Level Rates (In State) or (Out of State). Tuition for the PTEP (Professional Teacher Education Program is $400 a credit hour for the 2010-2011 Academic Year.

Sequence of Courses

This program is highly individualized to meet the students’ needs and focuses on two aspects.  One is your specific content (i.e. English) and the other is the Professional Teacher Education Program (PTEP)

Content-

Your transcripts will be reviewed for you to obtain your Course Evaluation Form (what you will need to take to be proficient in your content).  Your transcripts will be reviewed during your formal application process; however, you may request a transcript review prior to your application by submitting your complete (may be unofficial) transcripts to Jon Shaw.

Professional Teacher Education (PTEP)-

The PTEP sequence must be completed as follows:

*Your Content MUST be completed prior to beginning your field experiences which starts in the Fall.*

    1. Take the Educator’s Summer Session (this comprises of 12 credits and a checkpoint course called EDFE 125).  Upon completion of this you may move to number two.
    2. Take the Fall course load: EDFE 544 (Practicum), Methods Courses, ET 501, and EDFE 130.
    3. Take the Spring course load: EDFE 555 Student Teaching (9 credits) and any remaining Methods Courses (if necessary-ask content advisor).
    4. You will then be able to apply for your teacher license.
    5. If you are on the MAT: Curriculum Studies track you may begin taking courses at this time. Please email Dr. Frederick Bartelheim to begin advising.

      • EDFE 125, a Checkpoint course, arranged
        • If you are going to Take EDFE 554, Secondary Practicum in the Fall of 2012, you must submit a request for placement by March 15.

    Fall 2012 (all content courses must be complete to proceed with fall courses)

      • EDFE 554 Secondary Practicum (Note, 160 field hours are required beyond this schedule. Candidates spend two days a week in schools.
      • ET 501 Introduction to Applications of Educational Technology online.
      • Methods courses as needed (see your content advisor)
      • EDFE 130, a Checkpoint course, to be able  to student teach in Spring

    Spring 2013

      • EDFE 555 Supervised Student Teaching (last course in the program-must have completed ALL content, methods, and PTEP courses)
