Cooperative Association of States for Scholarships (CASS)

USAID Funded Program

CASS (The Cooperative Association of States for Scholarships) came into being in 1989 to improve the academic skills and practices of teachers in Central America and the Caribbean. The program, funded by USAID and administered by Georgetown University, provides opportunities for teachers in rural areas in Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic to attend a U.S. institution and complete a highly specialized program that meets the intention of the program.

The School of Teacher Education at UNC became one of the implementation sites for the CASS program and hosted the first group of CASS teachers in 2008. The program focuses on the following areas:

  • Master New Teaching Methodologies
  • Improve Content Area Knowledge
  • Develop Professional Development Skills
  • Develop Leadership and Advocacy Skills

All program objectives are achieved through the use of classroom instruction at UNC, public school involvement, volunteer activities in community agencies, and mentorship opportunities with teachers, administrators and community leaders.

At the conclusion of the program, all CASS participants return to their countries with new understandings of teaching methodologies; enhanced academic skills; materials to be used for Professional Development activities; and Action Plans to implement in their schools and communities to assist in the improvement of services offered to children and families.
