Move In Checklist
- Call to switch gas, electricity, internet, cable, etc. into your name. Be sure to give them the date which you will be moving it. It sometimes takes up to two weeks to get the information switched over. (See “Essential Services” for a list of phone numbers)
- Make a list of new things you will need for your apartment (dishes, pots & pans, furniture, etc.). Begin purchasing as soon as possible to find the best deals.
- Decide on rooms before moving things in, this will hopefully save a first day argument. Also decide on who is bringing what house items (furniture, dishes) to prevent an overload on some things and a need for others.
- Before moving anything in, fill out an inspection checklist, preferably with your landlord. This will help sort out which damages you did when you are moving out.
- Be sure to buy essentials (toilet paper, misc. house cleaners, paper towels, dish soap, etc.).
- Move in your stuff!
- Have a house meeting with your roommates as soon as possible to set up ground rules for the house before there is conflict.
Walk Through
It is very important to walk-through the rental before you move anything in to check for damages that you may be blamed for when you move out. Walk through each room and use this inspection sheet to determine what repairs are needed. Be sure to get a copy to your landlord; or even better, have your landlord walk-through with you and sign the inspection sheet (Click Here) to avoid conflict later on.
