Employee Appreciation General Information

Each fall and spring SPEEC recognizes outstanding classified staff with Employee of the Term awards.  The Employee of the Term awards were initiated by classified staff with support from Human Resources to honor UNC staff who deserve special recognition for their outstanding job performance, University, community and volunteer service.

Once again this year SPEEC Council members will dedicate much time and attention to encouraging nominations, reviewing nominees, and presenting the Employee of the Term and the Employee of the Year awards.  UNC has many deserving classified employees; it is SPEEC’s goal to better educate the campus on how they can help recognize these outstanding individuals through their nominations.

Who Can Be Nominated and Who Can Nominate Someone?

Eligible classified staff for nomination are UNC employees who have passed his/her probationary period and have been nominated by other UNC exempt staff, faculty and administration, or students.  Nomination forms are available from any SPEEC member or can be found here.

When nominating a classified staff member, nominators are asked to keep the following in consideration:

• Concern for and helpfulness to others.
• Pride in his/her job.
• Consistently high job performance.
• Actions above and beyond the call of duty.
• Adherence to safety procedures.
• Cooperative attitude.
• University involvement.
• Community involvement.
• Volunteer service.

How is the Employee of the Term Selected?

Upon receiving the nomination forms, SPEEC committee members will conduct a blind review, selecting three award winners who best represent Employee of the Term. Qualities for which individuals will be selected are outstanding service, superior performance, exceptional efficiency, integrity and dedication to UNC and to fellow employees.  We encourage nominators to give much time and attention to each form.  More than one nominator may sign the form and additional comments and information will assist SPEEC in making the best selection.

Join SPEEC this year in acknowledging outstanding UNC classified employees, this person may be sitting right next to you in your office.  Your nomination will help SPEEC recognize these individuals and present them to the UNC community as Employees of the Term.

Employee of the Year Award

Will be given at the SPEEC Banquet in February/March of the following year. All nominees will be listed along with the Special Service Awards.

A lot of advertising, excitement and momentum needs to happen before the Banquet for Employee of the Year and before the Fall and Spring Receptions. Being nominated should be considered an outstanding accomplishment.
