UNC Scholar Speaker Series
Guidelines for Applying
The UNC Scholar Speaker Series is intended to help support visits by noted scholars, researchers and discipline experts at UNC. The goal is to expand faculty and student interaction with experts in contemporary research and scholarly inquiry in a wide range of disciplines represented at UNC. Two or three speakers will be supported each semester.
Each proposed event should be planned for one or two days, with several opportunities arranged for faculty and students to interact with the selected expert. Invited speakers should be expected to provide major presentations as well as small group and individual instruction on their research topics, major research strategies and/or data analysis procedures as appropriate to the topic of the individual event. Invited presenters should also be asked to provide resources, references and guidance for faculty to continue using the knowledge gained from the scholar’s presentations.
The series is supported by SPARC and sponsored by individual faculty or department/ program units. Proposals for up to $2000 per event will be considered. Proposals should include anticipated schedule and budget. Sponsors are responsible for all arrangements including travel, hosting the guest speakers, major presentations and individualized sessions and publicity.
Proposals for hosting an event in the Scholar Speaker Series are to be submitted to SPARC. Proposals should be submitted during the semester prior to the planned event (excluding summer). Situations may arise in which funds are available in the current semester; however, that would be the exception to the rule. To inquire as to whether funds are currently available, contact Arlene Hansen at SPARC (351-1932 or arlene.hansen@unco.edu ).
Provide a cover page that indicates the proposal is being submitted to the UNC Scholar Speaker Series; the College, Department, and/or individual who is sponsoring the event; phone number and email address of contact person; name and title of the invited speaker; and the amount of funding being requested.
Briefly explain how the topic for the proposed event will have wide appeal among faculty and graduate students in the University including, and beyond, the hosting department. What will students and faculty gain from interaction with this scholar?
Briefly describe the scheduled events including a major public presentation, as well as additional opportunities for the scholar to interact with and provide instruction to a wide sample of UNC students and faculty. Please provide a title for the proposed public address.
Describe the extent to which the invited speaker is published in scholarly literature and/or is recognized among UNC faculty as a discipline expert.
Provide an itemized budget that includes funds being requested as well as additional funding to be provided by the College/Department or other sources.
If you are interested in hosting an event associated with the Scholar Speaker Series, please feel free to e-mail your proposal to Arlene Hansen.
