The Use & Protection of Human Participants in Research at
the University of Northern Colorado

The use of human participants in research at the University of Northern Colorado is regulated by University Policy 3-8-104, enacted by the Board of Trustees to ensure that all research carried out under the auspices of UNC conforms to ethical standards:  

3-8-104 Human Subjects. It is the policy of the University that all research and research-related activities, in which humans are used as subjects, shall be subject to review under current Public Health Service regulations by an Institutional Review Board (IRB). The involvement of human subjects in research covered by this policy shall be prohibited until the IRB has reviewed and approved the research protocol.

UNC faculty members, staff, and students who wish to conduct research that includes humans as research participants must receive the approval of the University's IRB prior to data collection. Please refer to the IRB Guidelines and additional resources when preparing IRB protocol applications:

Timeframe for IRB Review of Protocol Applications

Researchers may expect a response from the IRB on a submitted protocol application as outlined below; however, actual review times may vary depending on issues raised during the review process and on the time of response to IRB concerns by the researcher.

Exempt ReviewIRB will respond within 2-3 weeks from date of protocol submission
Expedited ReviewIRB will respond within 3-4 weeks from date of protocol submission
Full-Board ReviewIRB will respond within 4-6 weeks from date of protocol submission
