Faculty Member Receives Fulbright-Hays Award

Dr. Karen Barton, Lecturer in Geography, was recently awarded a Fulbright-Hays Travel award to conduct a Geography Curriculum project in Brazil for Summer 2007. As part of her curriculum project, Dr. Barton will visit six different regions of Brazil, including the Amazon Basin, the Gran Pantanal, and the Cerrado. She will focus on how cattle ranchers have become “accidental” environmentalists in the fight to protect Brazil’s wetlands through ecotourism ventures and, on her return, work to integrate her findings into UNC’s Geography curriculum.
