Independent Study Courses

Independent study courses (also known as correspondence or home study) are offered through the Office of Extended Studies to UNC and Non-UNC students. UNC Degree Seeking Students

Course Duration

Unless otherwise noted in the course description, you may begin an Independent Study course at any time and study at a pace that fits your schedule. Unless your syllabus/study guide states otherwise, you are automatically allowed one year (12 months) from the date of enrollment to complete your course(s).  If you fail to complete the course within the course time period, you will receive the appropriate grade for the work done during the entire course. Things to keep in mind:

  • The course must be completed within one year from the registration date;
  • The course tuition is charged separately from UNC main campus tuition rates;
  • The course is not eligible for College Opportunity Fund stipend;
  • The course may not be eligible for Financial Aid, please contact the Office of Financial Aid at 970-351-2502 with questions

Registration

  • To register for an Independent Study course, please contact the Office of Extended Studies at
    970-351-2944 or the Office of the Registrar at 970-351-2231 to receive an override to register for the course
  • Once you receive the override, you need to register for the course through URSA; registration will not be done for you. You will enter the course number (CRN) directly into the Add Classes Worksheet.
  • You will receive a registration confirmation with the drop and withdrawal deadlines at your Bearmail address.

Tuition

Tuition for your Independent Study courses is in addition to your regular campus tuition rate and is listed in the course description on the Extended Studies webpage. Course material costs (textbooks, CD’s, etc.) are assessed and paid separately.

Drop and withdrawal deadlines

  • You may drop your course through 10% of the course duration and receive a full refund.
  • You may withdraw from your course through 50% of the course duration. There is no tuition adjustment made.
  • If this is the only course on your schedule, you will need to contact the Office of the Registrar at 970-351-2231 or registrar@unco.edu to drop or withdraw from the course.

Course overload

If you are a UNC student and enrollment in this course will cause you to exceed 18 credit hours for the semester, please contact the Office of the Registrar at (970) 351-2231 for overload information.


Non-degree seeking students (Visiting Students)

If you are an undergraduate student with a GED or high school diploma, who is not seeking a degree at UNC, you may take a course for personal interest or to transfer to another college or university. If you have been previously denied admission by the Admissions Office, you are not eligible to take courses as a visiting student.

If you are a non-UNC undergraduate student (junior or senior with a 3.0 or higher GPA) and are interested in registering for a graduate level Independent Study course(s), you must provide verification of eligibility to enroll in the course. In order to do this, you need to:

  • Send an Official Transcript from your institution to:

  • Email Laura Hulsey (laura.hulsey@unco.edu) with the Independent Study course prefix and course number (i.e. I.S. ASLS555) as the subject line, stating your name and that an official transcript is on the way.
  • Once the Graduate School has reviewed the transcript, the Independent Study staff in the Office of Extended Studies will be notified if you are approved (or not) to be registered into the course.
  • The Independent Study staff will then contact you to let you know if is ok to register and secure payment.

Non-degree seeking graduate students are students who have at least a Bachelor's degree and have either applied to our Graduate School and not yet been admitted or would like to take classes but not pursue a degree.


Please note, as a non-degree seeking student,
you are not eligible for Financial Aid.

Registration

  • Please submit the Student Information Form online located at https://apps.unco.edu/StudentInformationForm/.  You will receive a confirmation email once processed, please allow 24 hours for processing.
  • Activate URSA, you online student portal, by going to ursa.unco.edu and click on “I need to activate my account”
  • Once activated, you may register by going to the URSA, Student Tab, Registration Tools, Register Add or Drop Classes
  • You will enter the CRN (Course Registration Number) in the Add Classes Worksheet. The CRN is  listed with the course on the course listing page:http://www.unco.edu/extendedstudies/independent/courses.html
  • Once registered, you will receive a registration confirmation at your UNC email address. This email will list drop and withdrawal deadlines. It is your responsibility to know the drop and withdrawal deadlines and procedures.
  • Registration does not constitute admission to the University.

Tuition

Tuition for the Independent Study course is a flat per credit hour rate and is posted on the Extended Studies webpage.  Course material costs (textbooks, CD’s, etc.) are assessed and paid separately.
UNC utilizes an ebill system; you will not receive a paper bill. You may view and pay your bill by accessing the Financial Tab in URSA or you may pay over the phone by calling the Office of the Bursar at 970-351-2201.
