UNC – TPS Regional OutreachUniversity of Northern Colorado – Teaching with Primary Sources Center is participating in a regional pilot project running now through December 2009. The goal of this Library of Congress-funded program is to offer short-term funding awards to organizations that impact teachers, targeting the Four Corners area (with a focus on American Indian populations) and the state of Wyoming. These projects are being funded to offer professional development and resources for educators that focus on integrating primary sources from the Library of Congress into instruction. UNC-TPS Regional Projects currently underway include: Indigenous Institute for Native Arts- New Mexico – Teachers participating in professional development institutes are designing culturally relevant, standards-based curriculum that integrates research skills and processes, access to multimedia sources, and best practices, using the Library of Congress' website and primary sources, along with other sources. History Day Expansion – New Mexico – Social studies teachers within one school district are receiving instruction and orientation to the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources content along with information about History Day activities. The goal is to expand History Day participation with quality projects from the one high school currently participating to all social studies teachers at district high school and middle schools. An additional goal is to work toward the creation of a Navajo History Day project. Primary Source Curriculum Integration - Laramie County Community College, Wyoming- Faculty is rewriting curriculum to integrate primary sources into their educational fundamentals courses. In addition, faculty will be sharing their work with colleagues at other Community Colleges throughout Wyoming. Nevada Council for History Education – One-day seminar for teachers, Boulder City and Hoover Dam: Then and Now: Teaching and Writing Local History, will include opportunities for participants to become familiar with Library of Congress website and related online resources as a component of their exploration of primary sources. Librarian Teacher Outreach - Snowy Range Academy, Laramie, WY – This project builds from a school core outward. 100% of the staff has completed Essentials Exploration Teaching with Primary Sources workshops, and during the 2008-2009 school year, the faculty will be working to embed Library of Congress primary sources in their curriculum. Their school librarian will offer introductory workshops in the spring to teachers throughout Wyoming, promoted through the Department of Education. Additionally, she will facilitate the sharing of the Teaching with Primary Sources project and opportunities other Wyoming librarians.
