Summer Institute 2009

Nation at the Crossroads: Rediscovering the Federal Writer’s Project
July 28-30 at the UNC Lowry Center – Denver

Thanks to everyone who helped make UNC’s Teaching with Primary Sources Summer Institute 2009 a success!

Nation at the Crossroads: Rediscovering the Federal Writers’ Project, held July 28-30 at UNC’s Lowry Campus in Denver, provided a variety of activities for the eighteen participants to immerse themselves in the 1930s New Deal era, focusing on Federal Arts programs.

Thanks to guest presenter Dr. Susan Schulten, history professor at University of Denver and Museum and Education consultant Mary Ann McNair for their expertise and insights. Among the activities were an outing to the Colorado History Museum and optional evening screenings of “Dust Bowl Documentaries.”
Throughout the three days, participants explored New Deal era primary sources from the Library of Congress and the Colorado Historical Society as well as other local sources, and created primary source sets and lesson plans.

This advanced institute, funded by the Library of Congress, was offered to Colorado educators who had completed the TPS introductory workshops. We were pleased to have among our participants, staff from Colorado Humanities and the state director for Colorado History Day.
