In September 2003, President Kay Norton initiated a comprehensive planning process which was named Charting the Future. During subsequent months, the campus community participated in the planning process that culminated in an organizational design and recommendations for a new UNC. The Charting the Future Final Report was endorsed by the Board of Trustees at their May 2004 meeting.
With the Board of Trustees' endorsement, the campus community is poised to implement the next steps in the comprehensive planning process. Activities to implement the new design and other recommendations for change will be carried out during the 2004-2005 academic year. These activities and time line are described in the Charting the Future Transition Plan.
The ultimate goal for 2004-2005 is to complete a transition from the current organization and governance systems to the vibrant and dynamic university design including the formation of college structures that include schools rather than departments.
