Dick for a Day / Jane for a Day writing/revising exercise

Start with a piece of writing that you have already finished (or tried to finish) and re-imagine it from the point of view of an opposite gender. If it is a first person speaker, the gender and name may change. You can invent an “alter ego” voice here.

If it is a third-person point of view, imagine either how an author of another gender would alter the voice and details etc., or how the main character would be in another gender. If it is an omniscient voice with no particular gender inflection, switch the gender of the main character.

This exercise applies best to works in which gender and sex/sexuality are already important.
