Prof. Matchett has been a member of the UNC faculty since 2007. She has a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Maryland (1998), an M.A. in Philosophy and Social Policy from American University (1992) and a B.A. with honors in International Relations from Brown University (1989). She is certified as a Philosophical Counselor by the American Philosophical Practitioners Association and as a Master Course Reviewer for Quality Matters. Prior to arriving at UNC she taught at the University of Denver and worked briefly in the non-profit world on issues of environmental and consumer protection.

Dr. Matchett’s scholarship and teaching are focused on putting philosophy to practical use. Her interests cluster around ethical deliberation, moral psychology, personal identity and practical agency, and most of her publications deal in some way with the relationship between ethical theory and moral practice, or with successful practices in ethics teaching and training, including the use of online media. Her regular course offerings include Ethics in Theory and Practice (taught both on-ground and online), Bioethics, Environmental Ethics, Personal Identity and Ethics through Fiction and Film. She has also directed advanced seminars on Feminist Ethics, Experimental Philosophy and Moral Psychology.

Dr. Matchett is currently collaborating on a longitudinal study of the effectiveness of philosophical counseling for helping new nurses navigate moral challenges. She also serves as a consultant with the Ethics AdviceLine for Journalists.
