I have decided that I am going to write my paper on the topic presented above. My thesis is that the core of ethics lies in metaphysics. I have been talking with Tom about integrating Kant's Critique of Pure Reason with his Critique of Practical Reason.

I'm curious if any of the rest of you have thoughts about additional sources and or additional points of interest connected with this topic that you'd like to share. If you do, I'd certainly appreciate it!

Hey Tim, could you elaborate on what you mean by “the core of ethics lies in metaphysics”? The two fields have always seemed quite distinct to me; are you going to be focusing on deontology, duty/good will, the categorical imperative? Which aspects of the two Critiques tie Kant's metaphysics together with his ethics? Cheers, and good luck!

At first, I was in complete agreement with you in regards to the two fields’ being very distinct. However, after reading some of Heidegger's lectures and listening to some of Tom's, I noticed a framework, not only for ethics but most of philosophy including metaphysics. For example, I plan on talking about one of the ideas in Heidegger's "On the Essence of Truth": We are all living in a thicket and need to come into a clearing in order to discover truth. This ties into Ethics, because to know what is morally right we need to use the same method. To know what is morally right or the true path to take in Ethics we must first come out of the ticket into the clearing. Another example that I plan on using is one that I found in a previous class on Contemporary Moral Philosophy. Here Rawls uses the veil of ignorance to establish moral principles. The veil is used to remove ourselves from the impacts of society (the thicket) in order to establish morality (the clearing).

In regards to which of the aspects of Kant I am going to focus on and how I plan to use those to tie his Ethics to his Metaphysics I am still researching that point.

Hope this helps a bit. Thank you.
