On Wednesday we dedicated the whole class to talking about having a degree. Some said that we didn't need a degree to get a good job. But then why are they here? I definitely disagree with the people who said that no degree is needed. If you choose a job that you love then you will never have to work a day in your life. We are in college because we want to better ourselves and our knowledge. It is very unlikely that someone without a degree will succeed. I am not saying that it is not possible but the chances are worse. On top of this, Tom said that he thought that it is not necessary to be a good writer to do well in business or, in general, in the "real world." If this is the case I wonder why we are being graded as if we were all great philosophers.

I mostly agree with you... However I think that the point that Tom was trying to make had more to do with getting a music degree. I would agree that that is one of the only fields in which you don’t need a college degree. Positions in which hiring and firing is solely based on talent would be the only positions that would not require a degree. But I do agree with you that all other fields do require a degree -- any field that hires on the basis of an interview and not an audition! For example, even to be a manager at a Wendy's, you have to have a college background. So for anything except music careers a college degree is a requirement. Also, one more thing I would like to point out is that it is not the place for an educator to announce grades to peers, be it in class or any other public area. For that, Vicky, I do feel very bad for you :)

I agree: I thought that it was wrong for Tom to tell me my grade out loud, but I have no control over that now. I also definitely agree that music is soley based on the talent that one has. But I don't think that going to college to major in music is a bad decision. It will help you to improve your talent, and learn more about how music is and where it came from. Overall, I say that anything that is not based on talent needs a college education, but going to college either way is not a bad thing. It will make you a more knowledgable person overall. There are young movie stars who make millions, but still decide to go to college. Sometimes it is about making yourself a better person.
