I remember reading something about the effects of Stoicism on the early Christian founders in the last chapter of Long. I was wondering if anyone can elaborate on this connection. It sounds interesting and applicable to modern thought.

There are a couple of books on this subject that are certainly worth looking at if you're really interested in the subject: Richard Sorabji's Emotion and Peace of Mind: From Stoic Agitation to Christian Temptation and Marcia Colish's Stoic Tradition from Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages: Stoicism in Christian Latin Thought Through the Sixth Century . You'd probably want to try to track them down via interlibrary loan. They're not readily available, and they're not cheap. There's a brief review of the Sorabji book that you can get by Googling the string:

and another one here (available courtesy of UNC) and a brief review of the Colish book at the following address:
