I remember reading something about the effects of Stoicism on the early Christian founders in the last chapter of Long. I was wondering if anyone can elaborate on this connection. It sounds interesting and applicable to modern thought.

There are a couple of books on this subject that are certainly worth looking at if you're really interested in the subject:
Richard Sorabji's Emotion and Peace of Mind: From Stoic Agitation to Christian Temptation
and Marcia Colish's
Stoic Tradition from Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages: Stoicism in Christian Latin Thought Through the Sixth Century
. You'd probably want to try to track them down
via
interlibrary loan. They're not readily available, and they're not cheap. There's a brief review of the Sorabji book that you can get by Googling the string:
Sorabji Stoic JSTOR
and another one
here
(available courtesy of UNC) and a brief review of the Colish book at the following address:
http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/journal_of_the_history_of_philosophy/toc/hph26.1.html
which, for some reason, I can't make into a link!
