So I'm about 24 pages from finishing the World as Will... I think I see a problem with S.'s ethics. I'm fairly sure that this one is the same that Nietzsche has w.r.t. the denial of the will(-to-live).

Here it goes:

So suppose that every human were suddenly given the ability to be virtuous - not just just but the big V. So if I'm reading this right, every human would be starving his/her self to death and/or facing crocodiles, running under the wheels of cars, jumping off the Himalayas, etc. Now who the hell is going to drive the car? Well that isn't really my beef. My problem is that that is NOT the kind of place I would like to live in. S. would say that that is just my will talking cos I haven't really denied it. But even so, the human race would soon vanish! Perhaps the veil of Maya would be lifted, but there would be no one around to appreciate the truth. It's one big koan. huh.

On the other hand, I really like the idea of sympathy as the basis for morality instead of the categorical imperative. Reading that section was like seeing my own thoughts on the subject thrown into sharp relief by a bright light.
