Article 1: Name
1.1 The organization shall be called the Coalition of Student Philosophers.
Article 2: Purpose
2.1 The purpose of the Coalition shall be to bring people together who wish to engage jointly in philosophical activities. The goal of the group shall be to promote a healthy and enjoyable learning environment.
2.2 The term of existence of the Coalition shall be perpetual.
Article 3: Membership
3.1 The membership of the Coalition shall consist of UNC students and alumni who have expressed an interest in philosophy. (All philosophy majors and minors shall be included on the mailing list and shall have automatic membership.)
3.2 The active membership of the Coalition shall consist of undergraduate students and graduate students who make the attempt to attend scheduled meetings announced by the officers through the mail or posted at Weber House. One mandatory meeting for all active members will be the yearly Spring Philosophy Picnic, where the results of officer elections shall be announced.
3.3 Active members shall have all of the privileges of membership in the Coalition, including the right to vote and to hold office.
3.4 Associate members shall consist of UNC faculty and staff and other interested people outside the University community. Associate members shall have all the privileges of active members except the right to vote and hold office.
3.5 Alumni members shall consist of former UNC Students who were members of the Coalition of Student Philosophers. Alumni members shall have all the privileges of active members except the right to vote and to hold office.
3.6 To maintain active membership, members shall be required to meet at the Spring Philosophy Picnic and must vote in officer elections.
Article 4: Elected Officers
4.1 The officers shall consist of a president, vice president, secretary/treasurer, and representative to SRC. The president, vice president, and secretary/treasurer shall be elected for a term of one academic year; the representative to SRC shall be appointed by the elected members of the Executive Board as soon as is feasible after their election. The appointment shall require a majority vote of the Executive Board. All officers shall be active members of the Coalition of Student Philosophers.
4.2 The Executive Board shall consist of the officers and the faculty adviser. The Executive Board shall be the governing body of the Coalition. It shall transact all business relating to the Coalition as a whole in the interim between meetings. The Executive Board shall call meetings, set the agenda, publicize the Coalition, and recruit freshmen.
4.3 The president shall perform such duties as usually pertain to the office of president. The president shall appoint all committees. The president shall be an ex officio member of all committees. The president shall officate at meetings and assist the vice president.
4.4 The vice president shall perform the duties of the president in his or her absence. The vice president shall keep informed of current university and community decisions affecting the Student Representative Council and Peer Representatives.
4.5 The secretary/treasurer shall keep records of the Coalition's business. He or she shall also keep a record of all members of the Coalition, collect and preserve all information of interest to the Coalition, and shall publish and send to members such papers and reports as the Executive Board shall authorize. He or she shall also report to the Student Activities Office at the opening of each school year the names and addresses of the officers. He or she shall report promptly any changes in this list which may occur during the year. He or she shall maintain all financial records.
4.6 The SRC representative shall attend regular meetings of the Coalition and the regular meetings of SRC. The representative shall inform SRC about the events and activities the coalition is participating in.
4.7 The election of officers shall be by secret ballot and shall occur during the week prior to the scheduled Philosophy Spring Picnic where the results shall be announced. The President shall be the officer elected as Philosophy Student Representative. A majority of votes shall elect the officers.
4.8 Officers thus elected shall be notified immediately and shall take office immediately. The term of office shall be for one academic year.
4.9 An officer may be removed from office by a two-thirds vote of the active members present at a regular meeting.
Article 5: Meetings
5.1 Business meetings shall be held monthly during the fall and spring semesters. No business meetings will be held during the summer term. The Executive Board shall arrange the meeting times.
5.2 Executive Board meetings shall be called whenever necessary. At a minimum, an Executive Board meeting shall be held at the beginning of each semester to arrange activities and examine expenditures.
Article 6: Adviser
6.1 One faculty/staff adviser shall be selected from the Philosophy faculty/staff.
6.2 The adviser shall be elected by a two-thirds majority of the votes cast at the Philosophy Spring Picnic. The adviser must possess the following qualifications: he or she must possess at least three years experience working with college students, either in the classroom or in student support services, and must possess specific knowledge of the Coalition and of the policies of the University of Northern Colorado.
6.3 The adviser shall provide advice and guidance to the Coalition and shall serve as a non-voting member of the Executive Board.
Article 7: Expenses
7.1 Operating expenses will be provided by the Student Representative Council following the adviser's approval.
7.2 Certificates of recognition for membership and annual recognition reception expenses will be requested through Student Representative Council. Annual determination of these costs by the membership is mandatory.
Article 8: Parliamentary Authority
8.1 The rules contained in the latest edition of Roberts Rules of Order shall govern the Coalition of Student Philosophers in all cases to which they are applicable and in which they are not inconsistent with the Constitution of the Coalition.
Article 9: Amendments to this Constitution
9.1 Amendments shall require an affirmative vote by the majority of the Executive Board and an affirmative vote of two-thirds of votes cast at a regular meeting.
9.2 All amendments shall be presented in writing at a regular meeting.
