Safety On Campus
Campus-Wide Emergency Plan
- UNC has been working hard for some time to address comprehensive emergency response planning and preparedness measures.
- Our current plan is web-based and we encourage our community to become familiar with it. You can find it online at www.unco.edu/police.
- You may notice that there are pieces that are a bit general. This is intentional for a few reasons; one being that it is a guide that applies to a myriad of potential emergencies.
- The UNC Emergency Response Team has gone through several “table top” exercises that tested their ability to respond to an emergency situation.
- All UNC campus building representatives have gone through specialized training in emergency response procedures.
- UNCPD and the office of Environmental Health and Safety continue to train faculty and staff on emergency response procedures.
Communication with Students
- There are systems in place for mass communication including a 50 phone "emergency call tree,” email distribution for campus safety alerts, and any information related to an emergency will be placed on the UNC homepage.
- The phone tree emergency lines are strategically identified to include major buildings on campus, including academic and residence halls.
- UNC has also invested in Voice Over Internet Protocol ("VOIP"). These special VOIP phones will allow for text and audio alerts and are in all offices and all residence hall front desks as well as all administrative areas.
- UNC's multi-layered approach to emergency communication for campus includes voice and text messaging. Visit the UNC Emergency Alert site for more information.
UNC Police Department:
- The UNC police department is a full service police agency with full police powers. The university police officers are certified level I sworn police officers in the state of Colorado and have the same police authority as all other police officers in the state of Colorado.
- UNCPD has a strong partnership and working relationship with other local police agencies.
- Our police department continues to grow, with the addition of our 14th officer|
- Our officers participate in on-going professional training.
- UNC Escort Programs - Escorts are provided by police officers or student security officers during hours of darkness for persons walking on campus.
- Emergency Telephones - Interior and exterior emergency phones linked directly to UNCPD are located throughout campus.
- Dialing 911 from any on campus phone will be routed directly to UNCPD dispatch.
- Dialing 911 from cell phones while on campus will be routed to Greeley Police Department dispatch. Therefore, we recommend all students, faculty and staff pre-program the UNCPD phone number into their cell phones (351-2245) to report anything occurring on campus.
- UNC PD employees a number of part-time security officers who act as additional “eyes and ears” on the campus grounds, parking lots, academic buildings and residence halls. They also provide escorts to students walking on campus after dark.
Housing and Residence Life Emergency Training and Communication Procedures
- Extensive risk management training and emergency response preparedness training has occurred for all student employees.
- All residence hall staff went through a "table top" exercise that tested their ability to respond in the event of a natural disaster. Other table tops are routinely held on campus.
- Residence life has a liaison program with UNCPD which partners one officer with one building staff.
- In the event of an emergency, communication will be disseminated from UNCPD to all residence hall front desks as part of the university’s emergency phone tree (the simultaneous call to 50 different phone lines).
- Front desk staff will notify hall staffs, who notify residents by going door-to-door and posting information, depending on the type of emergency.
- Additional security measures consist of:
- All perimeter doors of residence halls are locked 24 hours a day and there is video surveillance in the residence halls.
- Students must present their UNC ID to enter
- Guest check-in requirement at residence hall front desks
- Each residence hall room has a peep hole for students to be able to identify who is at the door.
- The university has the ability to send messages to all residence hall office phones.
- 24 hour staffed information desks
- Continuous review of interior and exterior lighting
- Annual review and trimming of planting around halls which may pose security or safety risks
- Emergency phones located strategically throughout residential areas
- Emergency communications are hardwired into all elevators and in numerous campus labs and recreational facilities.
