Academic Support and Advising

What Do/Don’t I Need To Bring to Orientation?

  • Dress is causal for all orientation sessions.  You will be attending programs all over campus, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
  • Rain gear is also recommended due to Colorado’s ever-changing weather.
  • Bug spray.
  • Students and parents will be paired with other students and parents for the overnight stay in the residence halls.  All towels and bedding will be provided.  You just need to bring personal belongings for the two days.
  • Lunch and dinner will be provided on Day 1 and breakfast and lunch will be provided on Day 2.
  • Your UNC BEAR Number.  This 9-digit number will be needed many times throughout your two-day stay on campus.
  • Transcripts from any other institution from which you will be receiving college credit.  If you have already submitted this information to UNC’s Admissions Office, you do not need to bring another copy.  Students who took college level courses in high school through a concurrent program do need a transcript from the college the credit is coming from.  This information is not included on your high school transcript.
  • Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exam scores if you have not previously sent these to UNC’s Admissions Office.  If you have not yet received a score from a test you took, that is okay.  Please be prepared to tell an advisor that you are awaiting this information.
  • Immunization documentation, if not already provided to the university (see below).
  • Students planning to apply for student employment must also bring a picture ID and either an original Social Security card, a certified birth certificate with the raised seal or a US passport.  Students will use this to complete an I-9 form at Orientation.

Immunization Information

Colorado State Law requires all students enrolled in one or more classes, physically attending classes on campus, and born on or after January 1, 1957, to submit proof of immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR).  Acceptable documentation includes a signed official immunizations record of two MMRs, with the first MMR dose administered no earlier than 4 days before the first birthday, and the second dose of MMR at least 28 calendar days after the first.  In lieu of immunizations documentation, an official laboratory report showing immunity to MMR is acceptable.

Medical, religious, and personal exemptions are allowed by law.  However, in the event of an outbreak of any of these diseases, exempted students may be subject to exclusion from school until the campus quarantine is lifted.  The University is not responsible for any liability the student may suffer because of an exemption and resulting unexcused absence exclusion and/or quarantine from classes.

The meningitis vaccine is not required; however, the State of Colorado does require that the University provide you with information regarding meningococcal disease and obtain documentation that you received this information.  Some meningococcal disease facts are included below:

  1. Meningococcal disease is a serious disease.
  2. Meningococcal disease is a contagious, but largely preventable, infection of the spinal cord fluid that surrounds the brain.
  3. Scientific evidence suggests that college students living in dormitories are at a modestly increased risk of contracting meningococcal disease.
  4. Immunization against meningococcal disease decreases the risk of contracting the disease.
  5. Additional information about meningococcal disease is available at the following web sites or your primary care provider:
