The Teacher Leadership Graduate Certificate is a 16-credit graduate program for those who wish to be leaders at the site level. This online teacher leadership certificate can be completed in just 9 months (see Course of Study section below) and is designed for working teachers.

The program supports teachers' efforts to improve teaching and learning in schools. You will broaden your perspectives of leadership and how it functions within a school setting. Certificate students will

  • Develop best practices in teaching and learning activities.
  • Attain leadership strategies and capacities to engage in collaborative leadership with peers, administrators and the community.
  • Provide significant contributions to continuous school improvement efforts.
  • Develop the skill set to be a successful peer mentor and instructional coach.
  • Prepare for leadership roles in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).

Additionally, all credits earned in this certificate program will count towards a potential future Educational Leadership Master of Arts (M.A.), Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) or Principal Licensure from UNC should you choose to pursue one after the certificate.

This teacher leadership certificate is offered completely online and can be completed in as few as two academic terms. Check the Course of Study section below for upcoming opportunities to start the program.

Course work is completed on your schedule. Some courses will feature recommended sessions each week where the class meets together online. These sessions will not be mandatory, but will enhance the program experience.

Course of Study

This 16 credit hour certificate can be completed in two terms featuring two 15-week courses and an internship course for you to apply the knowledge gained in the courses to a practical project at your school.

Some courses will feature 1.5 hours of synchronous (meeting at the same time) online sessions per week, which will not be mandatory but will strengthen the program experience. Session scheduling will be collaboratively determined by the students and instructor.

Required Courses

  • ELPS 601 Leadership Development through Inquiry (3)
  • ELPS 603 Shaping Organizations: Management and Leadership in Education (3)
  • ELPS 604 Understanding People: Professional Development and Educational Leadership (3)
  • ELPS 654 Instructional Leadership and Supervision (3)
  • ELPS 606 Internship in Educational Leadership (4) – You will sign up for 4 total hours of ELPS 606, 1 or 2 hours per term depending on your content course enrollment.

Flexible Enrollment Options

The Teacher Leadership Certificate is offered in two-term cycles.
All required courses are offered in two consecutive terms, then there are two terms without TLC coursework. Choose the enrollment that fits your needs:

Accelerated/Standard Enrollment: Enroll for two content courses and two credits of ELPS 606 (the internship course) for two consecutive terms. Each term, you will take two courses plus a two-credit Internship that is tied to both courses for that term.

Take Your Time Enrollment: Enroll for one content course and one credit of ELPS 606 (the internship course) each term that courses are offered. You will end up enrolling in four terms (with two terms off at some point in between) and complete the program in about 2 calendar years. Be sure to work closely with the program coordinator on which classes you need to take your first two terms so that you can complete during the later two terms.

Flexible Enrollment: If you have missed the first term of classes or want to do a heavier load for certain terms and a lighter load others, simply work with the program coordinator about application deadlines and an enrollment plan that works for you based on the course schedule.
